Moonlight scarecrow 🌋 -
First lights over the acidic lake of the Ijen Crater.
This was our last stop on our road trip around East Java before heading back to Bali. After a couple hours of sleep, we left Banyuwangi at midnight, drove for an hour and hiked up the volcano. Once up top we hiked down the crater to take a closer look at the sulphur mine and the blue burning lava on the banks of lake. The Ijen Crater Lake is one of the most acidic bodies of water in the world and the air down in the crater was so toxic from sulphuric acid gases that our eyes and throats were burning for the rest of the day despite us wearing gas masks. We were lucky enough to only spend a few minutes down there enjoying the extraordinary but highly inhospitable moonlike landscape. However, along with us were the local miners who work every day right inside these toxic clouds picking up massive blocks of sulphur and carrying up to 80kg down the mountain for less than $8. It felt quite odd to be enjoying the beauty of this landscape while seeing how harsh the working conditions are for these miners who despite all of it, including us being in their way, remain incredibly friendly and welcoming. If you look down closely at the photo, on the left side, you can guess the sulphur mine.
