Each floor provides a pocket space, aside from the hallway of distribution, where you can access your apartment. This pocket can be closed, so the private space of each tenant expands a little bit. The approach when it comes to finishes is based on earth tones colors and geometric patterns. • The staircase has a sinuous silhouette covered in a warm yellow mosaic, with a floating handrail connecting every floor.

Behind the imposing entrance you are greeted by a tall pack of stairs hurrying you up to the main hallway. The marble finishes continue in the inside covering the stairs, but only in the first hallway, ensuring a clear delimitation between the entrance and a more private area. • At the base of the staircase notice the improvisation of an administrative office in the form of a small box. The inscriptions written on the glass probably date back to the socialist era, taking into account the font used and the message transmitted.

If you find yourself on Ion Luca Caragiale street, it’s impossible to miss out on this beauty at 1A. • Built in 1937 by arch. Sonnenfeld Campeanu, the 5 storey collective housing block stands out along the street with the beautifuly designed entrance. To empashize the scale, of the entrance, the dark marble frame is gradually retracting from the facade, making space for a pack of stairs.

I was surprised to see a not so common shape for the staircase: the second ramp is shorter, turning at 90 degrees from the platform between floors. It creates this mono block volume that allows multiples views towards the hallway of each floor. • The position of the staircase within the building allows the 2 different areas to develop: a more private zone with access to the apartments and one closer to the staircase, more public, with the elevator and a hidden access door to the bridge from the interior courtyard.

Everything about this entrance hallway gets me thinking about a scenographic setting when it comes to design. From the luxurious finishes on the wall and floor, to the use of light in order to emphasize certain elements. • The sculptures guarding the entrance have a very rough texture, in contrast with the glossiness of the marble. The very well known mirror always near the entrance reflects the composition of elements, creating fascinating new angles.

On Vasile Lascar street 18 there is an intriguing element inside this collective housing block (built around 1935) that has had me dreaming about the moment I will get past the front door and explore it. • Walking on the narrow sidewalk, it’s nice to have some pocket spaces retracted from the alignment of the buildings, like this entrance, marked by 3 circular symmetricaly positioned soffits. Nothing out of the ordinary, until you take a look inside the hallway that resembles an art gallery, with the central piece in the limelight. • The distribution area is organized around the main element of this hallway: the administrative board. The dramatic use of light, concentrated on this board, while the rest of the space lays in the dark, gives you the illusion of a rare painting on display.

The hallway of distribution is next after the pack of stairs, taking you to the upper floors. What I find interesting while taking the stairs is the small incision in the wall, a oval shaped window, that helps ventilate the kitchens inside the apartment. A very intriguing and not so common or functional aspect of the design and layout of the apartments.

From the street directly into the first hallway, take a look at the mailboxes, they are one of a kind. Based on a triangular pattern, the geometric volume of the boxes guard on eash side the pack of stairs taking to the next space. The floor is covered in a small scale pattern made out of mosaic pieces, in a playful color theme.

Located on C. A. Rosetti street 43A, the blockhouse was commissioned by Stefanescu Grivita and built around 1930 by architect Radu Dudescu in collaboration with engineer Emil Prager. Today, the 4 story high housing block is classified in first degree seismic risk. • The metalic work on the entrance is still intact, in particular the address embroded above the door. The entrance is a clear delimitation between the public sidewalk and semi-public hallway inside, with no other spaces in between.

I said earlier about this house being a semi- collective urban villa, taking into account there is one apartment per floor, but all the tenants have access to their home from the same staircase. • The original wooden doors have detailed metalic accesories that go hand in hand with the wooden handrail of the staircase and all the other handmade embrodery.

The pack of stairs in between hallways is more of a buffer, creating a clear delimitation of a more private area. • The staircase has an elongated silhouette, with one ramp streching from floor to floor. A lighter shade of marble covers the stairs, while the wooden handrail stand out by color and detailing. • The platform in between floors offers a view towards the interior courtyard, where you can spy on your neighbours sitting on their big terrace you wish you had.

Whenever I found myself in Spain’s square I have eyes only for these 2 beauties: on the left, the one and only Anton Davidoglu housingblock by arch. Horia Creanga (already visited) and on the right, this intriguing robust urban vila, as a semi-collective housing typology. • The pattern of the metalic grill on the entrance had a hypnotizing effect on me as I was always passing by on the sidewalk, trying to sneak inside. • As I finally entered the place, I discovered a mesmerizing hallway, with a great spatiality. Notice the metalic embrodery on the mailboxes and in front of the radiator, that really stand in front of the marble background. The structure of the ceiling and the scale of the space create this monumental atmosphere for the guests entering.

Entering the first hallway, I was mesmerized by the level of detail in every element of the composition. Even if the pack of stairs is close to the door, forcing you to get faster to the next intermediate space, the design of everything will amaze you. ~ The floor is an artpiece by itself. Just imagine someone actually had the patience to put all the small pieces of mosaic together, in order to create this beautiful pattern that follows the stairs. The lines of the staircase continue on the walls as vertical registers out of marble. ~ The ceiling’s profiles pattern follow the same idea of composition seen on the facade or entrance door, only multiplied.

Still on Dionisie Lupu street, but further down, I visited a small blockhouse on 31, a very expressive art deco inspired building. ~ The zig-zag facade from the street is aligned with its neighbours, but it expands with triangular bovindows towards the street, creating a dynamic volume. ~ Notice the great proportions of the entrance door and the handmade elements on the metalic framery. The amount of details on this door is spectacular. If you look close enough, the pattern of the door resembles the composition on the facade, with triangular shapes.

As you make a right to the hallway, a monumental staircase unfolds. It’s pretty dark inside, but the tall windows guide you to the next floor. The scale of this space is fascinating and unexpected, judging by the first impressions. ~ While taking the stairs, the atmosphere is out of a medieval castle, taking into account the spatiality, the climbing plants hanging by the windows, filtering the light, and the design of the staircase. Even if you have to climb a lot more stairs than you would usually do, it is definitely worth your time.

Staying in the same neighborhood, next visit is on Dionisie Lupu 82. From the street you can’t see anything behind the gate. ~ You cannot see the massive gang carved in the house, that at some point opens up on the left and right with access to the hallway of distribution. ~ For sure you didn’t know about the hidden garden in the backyard, with a few houses sitting quietly along one side. Or did you?

Sculptural is one way to describe the staircase. From its starting point on the ground floor you can spot the continuity in materiality. ~ The black and white visual is interrupted by the glossy metal handrail, “floating” in space, as an infinite strip, that guides you home. ~ The narrow platform on each floor serves access for 2 apartments and an elevator.

The first hallway consists in a tall pack of stairs taking you very quickly to the main area of distribution. This space is a resemblance of the main hall in the urban villas, connecting multiples rooms. In this case the staircase, administration and one apartment. ~ This central composition space is also highlighted by the oval soffit, with a warm light. Notice the black and white elements of the composition used to achieve a contrast.

Donici Alexandru is a street I have never heard about before, but here I am at number 36 in front of a small collective housing block, near Icoanei park. ~ This entryway gives me the feeling of a portal, ready to unfold for me how life in this house works. As you’re walking on the sidewalk, you are simply drawn to this entrance, by the way it is designed. ~ The retraction from the facade leaves space for a pocket entrance, marked by two curved walls. Framing the door, the lighting system consists in vertical neon lights, in a symmetric composition.

Every floor is organized around an “L” shaped hallway, with views towards the interior courtyard. This influences the amount of light you get on different levels of the building. On the lower parts the light barely gets through the sandblasted glass, but as you get closer to the top, it’s brighter. ~ The small scaled black&white mosaic pattern follows the circulation, covering the entire hallway. There are about 4 to 5 apartments per floor, unfolding behind the black wooden doors. ~ The generous proportions and spatiality of the hallway can make a difference when it comes to the interaction between neighbours, even if you’re just passing by.

A second step inside the building takes us to the hallway of administration, a large area with linear stripes of light pointing to the staircase. Here you can check your mailbox, if you can find it on the big wall. ~ The concentric pattern of the marble floor marks this specific area and the distribution hallway begins with one step higher from this point. The walls are divided into several registers by horizontal lines along the walls, up to the first floor.

At the intersection between C. A. Rosetti and Dionisie Lupu rises a collective housing block, with a diagonal cutting the corner, in order to mark the square. You can take a look for yourself, while you pay a visit to H’art Gallery, that feature a great selection of artworks. ~ The entrance is facing towards the intersection, in total limelight, marked by a glossy dark marble frame. You enter through a massive door in proportions, framed by two pillars with a sharp profile. The transparency of the entrance lets visible to the eye of the pedestrians a small part of the spaces inside. ~ First hallway can be characterized as imposing, dominated by the tall white pack of stairs. The black marble used as a wall finish marks the continuity of materiality from outside to inside. Symmetry is one of the compositional elements used in the design, creating a very pleasing visual effect. ~ The platform above the hallway is marked above with three circular lights, a buffer space between semipublic- semiprivate.

Notice the proportions and scale of the staircase unfolding in one long ramp, enabling access for 4 apartments per floor. The amount of space assigned to this communal area is very unusual for a densified housing typology. It resembles a lot the socialist housing blocks, with long and narrow hallways of distribution. ~ The color palette on the hallways is pastel inspired, giving the whole space a socialist vibe, which is meant as a compliment. The geometric outlook of the staircase is a very strong presence overall and the openess of the space gives you the liberty to spy on your neighbours from the lower levels.

When you are in the main hallway, notice the playful pattern of the mosaic floor, with geometric forms spreaded along the way, guiding you to the next area. ~ I like how the lighting system works: in the main entrance the space is filled with natural light, but as you get to the platform of the administrative area there is a warm light coming from a hidden soffit, creating a different atmosphere. ~ Only when you get to the hallway of distribution you feel the change of character from a semi public area of the entrance to a more private space of the tenants living here.

Returning to Dacia boulevard, at number 70 there is a modernist collective housing block that has particular features, a lot different from the other modernist neighbours on the street. ~ For starters, there is a fence delimitating the public space of the street from the semipublic courtyard of the house, a ravishing green garden as a protective shield. ~ The entrance has a transparency that gives you the chance to take a look inside, while the green framery of the glass partition fades into the surroundings. Take a look at the beautifully crafted handrail of the door, two identical “C”shaped shells.

The system of intermediate spaces is organized around a linear axis. Next on the series of Dacia boulevard is a collective housing block at number 55, in a modernist approach, just like its neighbours from down the street. ~ The entrance has its place in the pocket created by the inclination of the facade ( something to do with the orientation of the house in order to get as much light as possible). ~ The triangle slab offers the visitor the chance to remove itself from the busy sidewalk and find the keys. This week’s posts follow a pattern if you didn’t notice: I will be presenting entryways from Dacia boulevard, some intriguing ones for sure. The collective housing block at number 51 was build in 1932, unfortunately I don’t have any information about the architect. If you know more about it, please share! The entrance is retracted from the facade with a pack of stairs, delimitating the public space of the sidewalk from the semi-public area of the entrance. Sadly, the framery of the doors has been replaced with new ones made out of pvc profiles. But the entrance hallway does not dissapoint! Notice the resemblance with the other entryways featured the other days when it comes to the coloured tainted glass windows opening towards the staircase. These ones also provide ventilation, being able to rotate around a central axis. Take a closer look to appreciate the fine details of the glass windows. #entrywaysofbucharest #entryways #bucharest #marble #journal #entrance #citigram #experiencebucharest #bucharestarchitecture #collectivehousing #staircases #hallways #architecture #entrance #documentingarchitecture #documentinghousing #inbetweenspaces #semipublic #semiprivate

After you come back to life from the astonishing entrance perspective, take a step further inside the building and go upstairs. Architects Tiberiu Niga and Ioan Niga, his father, built this blockhouse in 1928, located on Dacia boulevard 42, representing a good example of neo-romanian architecture style. The entrance is breathtaking in presence, details and scale. Notice the symmetry of the composition of elements along the facade, outlining as much as possible the entrance door. All the ornaments on the pillars and the frame around the entrance are inspired by the neo-romanian style movement at the time. Taking a step inside directly from the sidewalk, the main hallway unfolds as a tall space with a clear vertical dominant composition. A pack of stairs takes you to the circulation distribution area. The second apartment was under renovations and I got my chance to visit this entryway thanks to the kind worker who opened the door for me. Notice there is no intercom at the entrance, so this was the only way I could get in. The staircase ends on the last floor with a floating balcony above the hallway. I appreciate the modesty of the finishes, kept in really simple lines: wooden doors, mosaic finish for the floors and a delicate metalic railing with a sinuous wooden handrail following the silhouette of the staircase. #entrywaysofbucharest #entryways #bucharest #marble #journal #entrance #citigram #experiencebucharest #bucharestmodernism #collectivehousing #staircases #hallways #architecture #entrance #documentingarchitecture #documentinghousing #inbetweenspaces #semipublic #semiprivate

I had my eyes on this semi-collective housing block on Dacia boulevard 17 for quite some time now, and after returning to Bucharest I got my chance to explore it. The entrance is a well balanced combination of details and materiality. The first register of the facade is marked by vertical semi pillars, creating a certain rythm when you pass by it on the sidewalk. Notice the design of the metalic grill of the door, with a concentric composition starting from the level of the doorknob. After you enter the building you will find yourself in a small hallway with the staircase unfolding in a sculptural silhouette. The platform to the next floor is marked by a coloured stained glass window. When the filtered light hits the walls it creates a warm atmosphere inside the hallway. The limited series of Entryways of Rome was a great opportunity to explore my obsession with inbetween spaces developed in a total different context. It was a pleasant surprise to discover new places and I’m looking forward to new challenges. The last entryway is less luxurious and monumental when it comes to materials and finishes, but it has a spectacular spatiality inside. From the entrance we encounter the system of spaces unfolding one after the other. Notice the contrast of colour between the exterior facade and the interior walls. The long entryway hall is organized in two areas, taking you to a buffer zone. If you follow the red floor, you can spot the staircase hidden after multiple arcades. Notice the pattern of the marble floor imitates the geometry of the ceiling, creating visually a rhythm to what could have been a long boring hallway to get to your home. The same goes for the details on the walls, all in symmetry, all organized around a central spatial axis. The first hallway opens up to the luxuriant courtyard, where you can get to the other entrances of the building. I entered one of them, but after exploring the neighborhood I noticed a pattern in the design of the communal spaces. Prati district in Rome has an intriguing history. One of the main decisions made while developing this new area was in favor of monumental buildings, instead of monuments, in contrast with the architectural context at the end of 20th century.
