Such an incredible day. For the most part, backcountry skiing with your dogs in Central Oregon takes some travel time from town, and I finally brought the girls to an area where we could ski together. We had beautiful 360 mountain views and miles and miles of fun snow. My mood all changed after a, luckily okay, incident when we got close to the parking lot between myself and two women and their dog. We all had our dogs off leash, and neither of us saw each other coming until we were basically onto of each other. Thinking quickly, I told Baya “move along” so she would go ahead on the trail, then noted to the people dog, who was following Baya, that “she isn’t friendly”. This is obviously a stretch for Baya, she IS friendly, but I’ve found that exaggerating that tends to make people call their dogs with more urgency. Their response “she can handle it.” Excuse me, what does that even mean!? I don’t want your dog to “handle it”, I don’t want there to be a fight, I want your dog to get off my dog, RIGHT NOW... She’s going to get pissed off really soon! I sped up to try to separate the dogs with my skis, and as I approached, the dog got off following and sniffing her. Thank goodness. This scenario makes me so mad in so many ways. My biggest fear is that another dog over sniffs her, jumps on her or is simply just too much in her space, and she goes after them and gets killed. I don’t even want a fight. Let’s be real here, we all want the same thing, for our dogs to be able to be off leash, happy & safe. I have done my work with Baya, I am STILL doing my work with Baya. I am working SO hard to make sure she lives her best possible life, which means going on these adventures & staying safe. I have put in the training with her, I spent so many days and nights crying over her, I put her in an intensive 3-week training program. She’s trained on an e-collar. I can control my dogs in any situation I have them in now. I have done the work, and I do every damn day with her. What I cannot do is control the other dogs around me, with the exception of talking to the owner. I’m doing everything in my power so we can ALL have a fun time here, why can’t I get the respect back?
