That’s a wrap on principal photography of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Guided by the slyly brilliant George C. Wolfe with a loving embrace from our producer Denzel Washington along with Todd Black and Netflix. Truly a remarkable cast and crew that I love, admire and respect. This film has pushed me in ways that I will never forget. To be more open. To be more in service. To be even more raw. Each day an angel would whisper in a great man’s ear and say, “Share this with your band. Read it to them! Share your gifts.” These are the gifts that you want when you enter your cast tent. You want your big hearted producer to fill you with words and wisdom. Share tales that feed and fuel your soul to get in there and do the work that is your life’s purpose. I am forever grateful. I know that this process has shaken me to the core as an actor. It’s been a long time. I wasn’t sure of myself for a few weeks. I cried and my brothers and sisters put love around me. Sometimes you are not sure if you’ve got it. And trust me, that is a good thing. You are ready for a breakthrough. Feeling all kinds of blessed and I can’t wait to share this film with you. Chadwick, Michael, Glynn, Taylour, Jeremy, Jonny and dear dear Viola, we gave it our all. For August. Oh, and I did learn my slide positions on that trombone.
