Gneiss in the bed of Verzasca River in Ticino, #Switzerland. This gneiss has witnessed a turbulent history. Many millions of years ago it was a granite rock, a stone of feldspar, quartz and mica, on the earth’s surface. Layers of sediment covered it and pushed it deep into the earth’s crust. There it was heated and reshaped, and was finally raised again when the Alps were formed (close-up, width of frame around 1.5 meters).
