These days there is a marathon for everything; running, studying, Netflix watching, just to name a few. It's a word that has come to mark anything we do for an excessively long period of time. But a real marathon is more than something we do for 26.2 miles it requires dedication, pacing, discipline, and motivation to not settle for short term success. I don't think my marathon of Orange is the New Black took much of that to finish.
While marathons can teach us to keep our eyes on the prize, life isn't a marathon. A marathon is a finite period of time in which you know what the end will look like, while you have throngs of people cheering you on with every step you take. In life no one is cheering me on when I've motivated myself to work instead of procrastinating, no one is cheering me on when I stay in to get more work done instead of go out with some friends. While there is a finite period of time that I am on this earth, I don't know what the end will look like and therefore I don't know what I'm running towards.
Maybe there isn't anybody in this race with me, maybe Im racing against myself, trying to beat the person I was yesterday and while I hate the idea of not knowing what I'm running towards I promise it's something great.
