Does anyone remember when you were younger in Phys Ed and they would have the gymnastics set up with ropes, monkey bars, balancing beams and more? I definitely do! I would be mesmerized by the set up and excited to jump on the equipment, all except one… the ropes. I have a vivid memory of my #gym teacher at the age of 6 or 7, having each of us climb the ropes while everyone else watched. When it was my turn, I remember stepping up to the rope, closing my eyes and praying that I did a good job. I jumped on and used all my might to climb what I thought was the top, only to open my eyes and see that I had barely moved.
Exercise 5: Rope Climbs
The machine you see above, is one I have walked by 1000 times and each time I would take a glimpse and continue walking. It is amazing, how experiences when we are younger leave an impression on us. Although this is not a singular rope, the machine emulates the same concept by allowing you to adjust the resistance of your rope, tells you the length you have climbed and the time it took you to climb it. It forces you to engage your entire upper body and core strength with endurance. This week, for the first time, I didn’t walk by the machine, instead, I sat down and used it! Was I nervous? Absolutely. I watched my trainer/friend continue to increase the resistance to set me up, as he had no clue about my fears of using this machine. After years of not climbing a rope, I closed my eyes again, and this time said “I got this!” I felt myself reaching and pulling, while looking up imagining it was the ropes in my school gym. When my trainer said “time”, I looked at the screen and I had climbed 100 meters with high levels of resistance in approximately 3 minutes. I DID THAT! Me, my #arms , my #core , my #body but most of all my #mindset ! This for me, is a #win ; I reprogramed a memory and created a new one, I showed myself I am capable, I witnessed my personal #progress and best of all, I never gave up!
