Hey you!! I hope you are having a great week in your garden!! We have been busy this spring with our raised bed project but we also are finally able to move many of our berry bushes into their final home on our urban farm. ( This gooseberry is glad to leave its container!!) I thought I would talk through how I transplant them and if any of you have other tips and tricks please throw them down below so we can all benefit. Please note that there are mixed opinions about whether you should amend your soil with compost etc. I always do a bit because we have such heavy clay soils here along the front range. I do, however, think it’s important to use the native soil because that’s what the roots need to get accustomed to. Therefore, I never plant directly into a glut of gorgeous garden soil without utilizing the native soil because the roots may not grow beyond their cosy soil home. Instead I mix compost with the native soil so the roots are accustomed to both! 1. I like to transplant shrubs in the early evening when it is still warm so that the plant doesn’t get the shock to its system that the heat of the day provides. 2. I dig the hole to the right height of the root ball which can be a pretty big guesstimate so it’s helpful to have a friend (or gorgeous partner) who can hold the root ball while you adjust the depth. 3. First I water the plant well before digging it up. This helps the soil adhere to the root ball and protects the roots. 4. Then I fill the hole with water and let it drain. 5. Then I add mycorrhiza which promotes root growth and I mix a 5-5-5 organic fertilizer into the planting hole. 6. Transplant the root ball into the hole and use the tips of your fingers to push soil down the gaps all around it. Roots don’t like to grow through air pockets so it’s important that it is backfilled well. Press the plant down firmly into the soil and make sure it is level with the soil or has a slight indentation or “well” so that the water doesn’t run away from the roots but drains towards them.

@lucyliz_96 had never been camping before we got married three months ago. Now she’s hiking in whiteout snowstorms at 13,000 ft. - she’s an absolute boss and I’m so proud of her! The mountains are wild and powerful; they can either unite you as a team, or tear you apart. Grateful for every growing experience together, especially in the mountains. 🏔😊

Wild Mustangs learning new things. You know I was terrified of horses before I met my now husband? My friend Will saddled me up on my first adventure almost 9 years ago, ice on the ground and at the tail of a 16 horse pack string deep in the wilderness. I survived. . Horses have healed my deepest sorrows and reminded me how to be present. I am fortunate to understand what it feels like to be scared of horses (Mardi Gras Cops on horses?! Real thing), it’s made learning to love them and let them love me a unique process. Thankful to have with these beautiful animals in my life and thankful my in-laws and husband have helped guide me to where I am today. From daily clinics, youth camps and yoga retreats I truly look forward to sharing this experience and so thankful for those that have trusted in us to provide. 🙏🏻🌞🥰 #proudtobeacowgirl #realranchlife

Devils Head is topped by the Devil's Head Lookout, an active United States Forest Service fire lookout tower. Access to the summit and lookout tower is via the Devils Head National Recreation Trail. Devils Head name comes from prospectors of the late 1800s. From the southwest of Devils Head, and looking northeast toward the mountain, one can see a shape of a face laying flat, as if the mountain was looking up. ⛰ #devilsheadlookout #coloradogram #coloradoinstagram #coloradical #explorecomore #nomadcolorado #rampartrange #nationalforest #firelookout #firelookouttower #safetyfirst #coloradohikes

“One cannot and must not try to erase the past merely because it does not fit the present.” ~Golda Meir, My Life . . . Grave and marker of Albert H. Pfeiffer, 1822-1881. American West history records both meaningful and horrific things happened around 1859. Pfeiffer worked with area Ute tribes as a scout, and also under Colonel Christopher "Kit" Carson. Pfeiffer and Carson, following orders from the U. S. Army, launched a full-scale assault on the Navajo population in 1864. Carson and his men destroyed everything in their path, eradicating the way of life of the Navajo people. Difficult to learn about, but can’t change history. When it happened, the men were glorified for making way for new settlers. Sometimes history is ugly.••• • • #navajo #americanwest #historic #usarmy #uglytruth #southforkcolorado #rurallife #neighbors #sanjuanmountains #spiritual #takeahike #coloradolife #coloradooutdoors #sanluisvalley #nature_lovers #coloradoinstagram . . . . . . #amazingview #highaltitude #gratefulheart #explorers #coloradonative #getoutstayout #womenwhohike #treelovers #findyourpassion #lovethemoment #choosemountains #landscapephotography #writersofinstagram #GoldaMeir
