Million-dollar views along Colorado's Million Dollar Highway.
US Route 550 runs from Bernalillo, New Mexico to Montrose, Colorado. A 25-mile stretch of US Route 550 which runs from Silverton, CO to Ouray, CO is famously known as the Million Dollar Highway—and it's no wonder why. It was built in the late 1880's as part of the San Juan Skyway.
Historians dispute the origin of the name, and there is no record of why it's really called the Million Dollar Highway. Some say it cost $1 million to build, others say there's $1 million worth of gold ore in the road, and another legend says that someone offered to buy the stretch of road for $1 million. If you ask us, the road was named for its million-dollar views.
Either way, it's one of the most scenic drives around. Just be sure to pay attention when you're driving on this road—it's also one of the deadliest highways and locals have nicknamed a portion of it the Highway to Hell. There are plenty of videos on YouTube featuring near-death experiences on the road and has humbled many drivers and motorists.
