Ladies, let’s give it up for this 904 Boss Babe right here, Deb Nicol! Co Owner of Jacksonville’s infamous @tacolujaxbeach . It’s safe to assume that most of us have enjoyed many margaritas, tacos and endless chips and salsa, and have this Boss Babe to thank!
Deb and her husband Don, opened TacoLu in 2008, with two young children after thinking they were done with the restaurant business. The economy was tanking and the couple made a leap of faith. After taking many trips to Southern Cali, Mexico, NY and all the taco places in between, it was time to bring Baja-style traditional Mexican tacos back home. A bit skeptical at first, they hoped to earn enough to pay the bills, vendors and staff and possibly save toward their children’s future college tuition. Henry, their oldest, was just 6 years old, and their daughter Lucy, whom TacoLu is named after, was 3 years old when the doors opened. Just like their two young children, TacoLu came to require a lot of time and energy and essentially became their third child.
It took about six months for the couple to be thoroughly convinced of its impending success and immense potential. It didn’t take too long though, for the pair to realize the immense potential of TacoLu. TacoLu has succeeded beyond the Nicols’ wildest dreams. What Deb & Don have built, is not just a local taco joint, it has become a must-try restaurant, tourist attraction, valued employer and community partner.
For a decade now, Deb has been committed to helping @thedonnafoundation provide support and financial resources to families living with breast cancer. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the organization and puts on the most highly anticipated annual charity events of the year, “Tacos for Tatas” which was founded in 2011. She has even performed in the First Coast Dancing with the Stars 2017!
Deb, you are more than an inspiration to us all! You truly exude what it takes to be a strong leader, fearless woman, mother, wife, a fantastic employer, and a true friend. Your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed and we thank you for creating such a blessing for our community!
