Penelope Forlano’s Hong Kong Pattern from the series En_Case (Engraved Casegoods) 2017 “For this particular piece, Forlano conducted an interview with a family about their personal and ancestral past, going back as many generations as they knew about. Recurring or overlapping themes and stories, including significant places and experiences, were then translated into patterns. “One pattern shows parts of the Hong Kong skyline repeated with intensity and density of detail, to evoke the family’s experience living there.” #furnituredesign #designstories #objectstories @penelopeforlano #fromthearchives #thedesignwriter

Back in, oh I don't remember when, a friend of mine asked me to do a painting for her. This is my very first commissioned painting from back in 2008 (?). I was nervous as ever and thought the buyer would hate it even though I was incredibly proud of it. I love looking back on my old work. Through it I can see how I have grown as an artist - not just in technique but also in confidence. I've learned to love my work, not just because it sometimes turns out the way I intended, but mostly because it's part of who I am. My artistic gift, whether you may think it's grand or not, will always be my way of searching the depths of creation and God's incredible handiwork - stroke by stroke, colour by colour, moment by awe-inspiring moment. For it's when I try to copy something God has made that I truly am in awe of how intricate and unfathomable even a bunch of cows in a field with a mountain in the background can be. Oh the depth of the riches of God! How blest are we to be able to live in a world where we are surrounded by all this beauty that we do not even pay for! I have no idea if this painting was ever framed or if it ever hung on a wall, but I'm still proud of it. Especially since the Hudson Bay Mountain continues to be my favourite mountain to paint. #stephanielorinda #acrylic #hudsonbaymountain #smithersbc #cow #fromthearchives #artoninstagram

#tbt Belated Happy birthday to William Faulkner !! Two icons: Billie Holiday and William Faulkner, photographed in 1956 by Moneta Sleet Jr. According to Donald Clarke's 2009 biography on Ms. Holiday, she was initially wary about meeting Mr. Faulkner because he was a Southerner. She called her friend, the singer Thelma Carpenter (best known in later years as "Miss One" from "The Wiz") and asked about him. Ms. Carpenter said that the meeting was likely set up by Bill Dufty, her ghostwriter for "Lady Sings the Blues" and that the singer and the writer "got along beautifully... he understood her perfectly." Happy birthday to jazz singer, bandleader and journalist Judy Chamberlain (born September 26, 1944 in New York City). She is known for her extensive repertoire, estimated at four thousand songs from the Great American Songbook. The Los Angeles Times jazz critic Don Heckman has called Judy, "remarkably eclectic and versatile... always an intriguing interpreter of the standards" and has written that she is "almost guaranteed to know your favorite love song, no matter how obscure." Chamberlain also wrote restaurant reviews, society and editorial columns for the Orange Coast Daily Pilot in Costa Mesa, reviewed restaurants for the Torrance, California Daily Breeze, the Los Angeles Times Calendar Live and Cox Interactive Media's LAInsider.com and hosted a restaurant interview show, Dining With Judy on K-OCEAN 103.1 FM (now KDLE) in Newport Beach, California and Savoire Fare on the Orange County Newschannel. #jazzlegend #jazzsinger #jazz #vocalist #cooljazz #standards #ballads #stylist #songbook #classicjazz #fromthearchives #jazzphotography #musicblog #vocals #judychamberlin #hbd #virtuoso 🎼🎵🎶🎙🎂🙏✌🧡

Behold the power of trees!!! ⁣ ⁣(also, the power of electricity via a cable to light the trees)⁣ ⁣I love how the whole city of Leavenworth, Washington, puts so much effort to be photogenic. Even the trees get involved. I walked around in the evening to get some cool night shots of the town, but I didn’t expect to see this! I’m thinking this might go up on my site for purchase, as I think a large print would look pretty cool.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ #lifeisart #fromthearchives #night #nightphotography #lights #trees #nature #minimalism #snow #winter #naturephotography #outdoors #washington #leavenworthwashington #landscape #landscapephotography #nikond810 #photoprints #fineartphotography #fineartprints #artprints #ASF_artists #asf_artists_september_26 #worldmark

We are currently in the process of rehousing and digitising our exhibitions archive dating back to the 1980s, when Te Tuhi was known as the Fisher Gallery. Here we share some material from the major exhibition Implicated and Immune: Artist' Responses to Aids (23 September - 20 October 1992), curated by then-curator of the Fisher Gallery Louis Johnston. The exhibition and accompanying publication was one of the most ambitious projects in the gallery's short history; a culmination of the exploration by artists and writers of the impact of aids in our society. #FromTheArchives #TeTuhiArt

#FromTheArchives | This week’s item is Dell’s Peanuts comic book # 7 (Nov-Jan. 1961). In addition to doing daily and Sunday strips, Charles Schulz also published his work in comic book form, which could include both reprints of the strips and original material. There were a limited number of books in this Dell series, all featuring great original covers like this one of Charlie Brown and his pal Snoopy. The back cover, also shown here, sports an ad for Schwinn bicycles, the favorite way for kids to get around back in 1960.  _ The materials in the ADG Research Library are available at no charge to all members of the Art Directors Guild. You can come in and do research in person, or we can do research on your behalf and send you images of what we find. To get started, send your questions to Barbara Hall at barbara @adg.org.

It's springtime in 1923 in the Red River Valley, and the Red—which will flood its banks several times in the twentieth century to great spectacle—is swollen with meltwater and rain. Cattle dealer James Braden's yard, which is near the Seine River, a tributary of the Red, falls victim to overland flooding, and so Braden must navigate his property by boat. His tenants, Poledore and Madeleine Gyselinck, who migrated to Manitoba from Belgium and worked in a munitions factory in Toronto during World War I, pause for a photographer, who has positioned himself on a railcar to capture the shimmering, transient lake. The Gyselincks' firstborn, Eugene, five years old, finds the great puddle more impressive than the man on high, though. — Jim Gyselinck, who submitted this photograph, is a retired Winnipeg firefighter and the youngest son of Poledore and Madeleine Gyselinck. This photo and caption come from Canada’s History’s Album Archive. .

From the Dutton Archives: #tbt to when taking an author out to lunch was serious business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ John Holwell was the secretary and treasurer of E.P. Dutton & Co., and by this time in 1955, the Dutton team had already published editions from a slew of esteemed authors including John Locke, Victor Hugo, Daniel Defoe, Charlotte Bronte, and Elsa Schiaparelli. And it was in September of 1955 that Dutton published an edition of Francois Voltaire's CANDIDE AND OTHER TALES. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Dutton offices are now three blocks from that famed hotel . . . if you could take one of our authors out to lunch, who would it be? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #throwbackthursday #duttonarchives #fromthearchives #framedphoto #hotelstregis #lunch #authors #history #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bibliophile #booknerd #bookworm #madmen

The women's Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) were a women's branch of the British Army from 1939-49. Here's a fascinating picture of a woman in October 1941 at work with a soldier repairing transmitting and receiving sets. Popularly known as the ""Brains Trust"" of the Royal Artillery and stationed at observation posts along the East coast, these women worked out scientific calculations for experimental gunnery activity. These women were the only ones in the service who were allowed to wear the navy blue and scarlet field service cap of the Royal Artillery. The Royal Artillery Colonel said of their work that they 'had proved to be better than the men at the job.' © Hulton Archives/Getty Images #WorldMaritimeDay #TBT #FromtheArchives #WWII #WWII180

I made this photograph in the city of Chongqing in southwestern China in 2014. The city is now inhabited by 30 million people. I wonder how this woman makes a living in an emerging city with so many inhabitants. Did she awaken before sunrise to source these robust and exotic grapes in the surrounding countryside? How long was her commute to the mega-city and what time does she return home? Questions surface when I contemplate this photograph. And I find myself inspired to return to a nation that continues to change at a mind-boggling pace.
