Started looking at second movement of #Ligeti Sonata for Solo Cello yesterday. Immediately realised I was going to need a metronome to survive this. 😬 Bit of research leads me to @soundbrenner {swipe 👉🏾 to see} - vibration and light pulse metronome in a watch watch. It looks AMAZING. Have any of you musos tried one? I’m seriously thinking about saving some pennies to buy one, (after I’ve bought my replacement strings.. 🙄) but don’t want it to just be a gimmick? •~~~~~• : : : : #JayEmmeCello #Cello #Cellist #Musician #Music #SoundbrennerPulse #Metronome #Practice #MusicPractice #MusicStudies #LigetiCelloSonata #Violin #Viola #Bass #1000DaysOfPractice #365DaysOfPractice #CelloMusic ••••••• #Repost @soundbrenner with @get_repost ・・・ "The coolest metronome ever! 🎶....You can actually FEEL the beat instead of just hearing a sound like from traditional metronomes which I usually don’t use anymore because they’re annoying me so much. But I will definitely continue using my Soundbrenner Pulse, because it makes practicing with a metronome so much easier and so much more fun!" - @sarakawczynska #Soundbrenner #SoundbrennerPulse #instamusic #piano

Lessons in Love is an honest description of what you can expect from Sinéad Harnett's debut album. The singer gracefully tackles the ups, the downs, the messy, and of course the painful components of being in love. The record has its footing in classic R&B meanwhile effortlessly incorporating flourishes of a modern soundscape, highlighting the genre ability to meld a diverse set of influences. Harnett proves her artisitic maturity as each track can hold its own while also helping to paint a clearer picture as the album unfolds. Lessons in Love never loses its way or chases trends with a laser focus that lends to its cohesion as a singular body of work. The songs play out like a confessional from someone who has lived these situations with real thoughts, fears, and feelings peppered throughout. Harnett imbues the tracks with a directness that's been sorely missing from music. She's not interested in being the clever lady, nor the scandalous girl, instead she's an honest woman opting to express her emotions through simplistic but devastatingly raw lyrics. "Pulling Away" pairs the British singer with Gallant as they depict a relationship that is trying (and unlikely) to recover after a sexual indiscretion. "You're just too good. I'm only going to let you down," is the hook to album standout "Too Good for a Bad Thing." On the track Harnett delicately let's her mate know he's just too good for her, and she's letting go. "Leo Bear" is ode to an unshakeable love, a love that will endure all life's trials. "If You Let Me" has Harnett pleading for a chance to prove her love. The staggerly beautiful "Him Too" finds Harnett feeling for her lover's ex whom has failed to move on. The lyrics are tender, mature, and address the hardship of moving on from heartbreak through a unique view point. Lessons in Love is the type of debut that creates an excitement for what may be ahead. Harnett delivers an assured and confident first offering which doesn't shy way from exploring the emotional depths of love. Love is a subject that has been mined to death, but Harnett succeeds at crafting a new perspective. She didn't reinvent the wheel, but she gave us a new way to look at it.

The Highwomen came to be in 2016, when Amanda Shires had the idea to put together an all-female country supergroup, partly in response to the prevalent gender bias of country music radio. Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Brandi Carlile gradually joined Shires and the group project was a go. Female camaraderie is at the heart of their debut record. It's felt most intensely on the harmonious ballad "Crowded Table," where the band advocate for inclusiveness and kindness: "everyone belongs," they repeat. On the bluesy "Don't Call Me," the Highwomen come together to fend off a dirtbag, and on the album's catchy, anthemic single, "Redesigning Women," they celebrate powerful women who do it all, "raisin' eyebrows and a new generation." The album is at its best when the Highwomen subvert country tropes. On the opening track, "Highwomen," they nod to their namesake and put their own spin on "Highwayman," a song by the 1980s country supergroup the Highwaymen, made up of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. The original song featured each band member channelling a different macho, all-American hero who died in his line of work. The Highwomen's version follows women who have been persecuted and killed throughout history and the resulting track is breathtaking. Midway through the record, on "If She Ever Leaves Me," Carlile belts out a love ballad for the ages. In this magnificently queer country song, a woman reflects on her love for another woman while imagining losing her. But, addressing a man who is probably a lot like the male country music traditionalist rolling his eyes at the idea of the Highwomen, Carlile sharply guarantees that, "if she ever gives her careful heart to somebody new, well it won't be for a cowboy like you." The Highwomen arrives when various country artists are offering stories that are distinct from the genre's predominately straight white male narratives. The album is both a call for change and a celebration of women in country music. At the Highwomen's table, chairs are left empty and they encourage anybody who doesn't see themselves in country music to take a seat and to tell their own story.

Debut solo album from Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard stretches out even further, casually and unpretentiously, as if on a sofa with a guitar when everyone’s at work. These songs started as melodic scraps and Howard astutely keeps them feeling scrappy. You can feel the torn edges of vocal samples as they rant and repeat, while her own voice will chant or sing over itself; there is plenty of room noise and lo-fidelity, but never in a needlessly fetishistic way. It has the skittish quality of J Dilla, and indeed, "Tomorrow," "He Loves Me" and "Goat Head" are underpinned by rhythms that sit between hip-hop and neo-soul. There’s something of Gil Scott-Heron’s rangier moments too; the careful, melancholy placement of the notes of "Short and Sweet" evokes Billie Holiday. The scraps are glued into place and luminously lit by Howard’s brilliant sense of melody, and her searing lyricism. The standout is "Georgia," which begins with Howard repeating “I just want Georgia to notice me” in a girlish chant, as if picking petals off a daisy. Soon she is left with just a stalk, and the impossibility of her ardour hits her full-force: the song switches up with a stirring organ motif and becomes intensely moving, two scraps finessed into something whole. The excellent "Goat Head" lays out the racism her parents faced as a mixed-race couple in the American south, Howard’s lyric written with a child’s blend of clarity and confusion at the injustice. But it’s emotionally as well as musically varied. "He Loves Me" sees Howard giving up church safe in the knowledge that God is still smiling on her when she’s drinking too much and smoking blunts; she finds herself in a different cloud on "Stay High," of bliss that’s perhaps musical, perhaps post-coital, backed by twinkling waltz-time soul. Artists often take on solo projects to get things out of their system before regrouping, but those things are rarely as beautiful as they are here.

A preened indie poster boy on the surface, a few statements that ring amongst his dearly devoted fans are that he “appeals and educates a younger generation whilst still being upbeat and easy listening” and, more commonly, “one of the most important artists right now." Debut album Hypersonic Missiles tells us blatantly and boldly why these fans might just be right. This kind of guitar-laden indie-rock is hardly a new concept, but it is something that Sam Fender carves his own dent into. Of course, an artist of this calibre cannot go without its tributes to the indie-rock overlords. "That Sound" has an intro that screams Oasis, whilst the catchy and kitschy "The Borders" mimics the atmospheric thump of semi-newbies DMA’s, with a sensational '80s-style saxophone to add a thrilling twist. Thematically, this album is superb. Fender’s social and political awareness is exclaimed throughout in stunning detail. From the discussion of politicians messing up Brexit and the haunting echo of “their evil is still not gone” referring to Fender’s own ancestry in "White Privilege" to the stark telling of male suicide in "Dead Boys", Fender navigates through these difficult themes with care and sophistication. Fender’s sensational vocals are another key talking point, which come alive on the slow anthem "Call Me Lover." This is a debut album that cements Fender’s place at the golden table: the perfect first attempt.

Painting a beautifully uplifting portrait of Real Life, the exceptional Emeli Sandé returns Friday with her latest offering. After taking a self-proclaimed “intense personal journey of self-doubt and self-discovery,” this talented woman has arrived at studio album number three, the 11-song Real Life. Writing alongside Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse), James Poyser (Erykah Badu) and the album’s producer Troy Miller (Laura Mvula, Jamie Cullum), she crafts a bold, confident and fearless new sound that continues to highlight her exemplary vocal theatrics. Real Life opens to the sultry vibes of “Human,” where funky bass anchors a clear display of Sandé’s undeniable vocal might. A reminder that the color of our skin means nothing—we all possess vulnerabilities and we all bleed the same—the lead-off track wastes no time in sharing universal truths as it hits hard in the feels. “You Are Not Alone,” a Broadway-worthy epic, couples a piano accompaniment and a Gospel choir with our diva’s lush vocals. An invitation into friendly arms, an uplifting caress, this is an affirming vow that you will make it out alive—and you’re not the only one. Amping the pace but holding onto that lush positivity, a Disco beat anchors the soulful “Shine,” which is guaranteed to make you prance out into the sunshine and dance. A twinkling intensity flits around the heart of the magnificent “Sparrow,” a bold, anthemic guarantee that you can take the world by storm—and a must hear track. Then, piano ballad “Honest” takes that promise and turns it inward in a truly moving moment, a reminder to never take anything for granted, particularly the people you love. Emeli Sandé makes heartfelt music with soul, and her sultry vocals caress the senses as she sings universal truths that provide a glowing ray of hope. Whether this positivity comes in the form of a piano ballad or an upbeat, danceable offering, Sandé rocks it on this collection of radio-ready hits. If the goal was to craft an album that provides a smile to those that feel disenfranchised in our chaotic world, Real Life succeeds with its lofty harmonies, catchy choruses, and showstopping vocal performances that speak of universal love and hope.
