“And each separate dying ember wrought it’s ghost upon the floor...”
I’ve always loved this quote from Poe’s The Raven. It’s so simple and elegant, so intriguing, yet mundane— shadow watching, being entranced by a force of nature that has infiltrated your space. We’re so captivated by fire, and by the changing light of day. We can’t help but notice shadows and maybe even wonder if they have minds of their own, that maybe they choose to follow an object.
I’m in a weird mood today, and I spent the afternoon alone in the quiet house. At twilight, I sat in my office and watched the shadows of the sunset dance on my walls, and when they left, I lit a candle and watched the flame. My brain shut off, I became a woman sitting in a cave millions of years ago, just watching the flicker of a campfire cast phantom wisps on my painted cave walls.
It’s moments like those when I feel the most connected to the earth, to time, to the cosmos, to spirits— all of these elements working together, breathing, infiltrating my space, weaving the fabric of the world unseen all around me. I think that’s magic, isn’t it? .
Wishing all of you a lovely evening!
