Why Meditation is necessary from the Medical Science's point of view? From the time of the birth till death the heart works continuously. Everyday the heart pumps 7000 litres of blood, of which 70% blood is pumped to the Brain and the remaining 30% to the rest of body. How does the heart work so efficiently and effectively? Heart works effectively because it follows a discipline. In normal conditions the heart takes 0.3 secs to contract {systole} and 0.5 secs to relax {diastole}. So, 0.3 + 0.5 = 0.8 secs are required by the heart to complete one beat {1 cardiac cycle}. That means in 1 min, the heart beats 72 times which is considered as normal heart beat. During the relaxing phase of 0.5 secs the impure blood travels through the lungs and becomes 100% pure. In some stressful conditions, the body demands more blood in less time and in this situation the heart reduces the relaxing period of 0.5 secs to 0.4 secs. Thus, in this case the heart beats 82 times in 1min and only 80% of blood gets purified. On more and more demand the relaxing time is further reduced to 0.3 secs & then only 60% of blood is purified. Imagine the consequences of the lesser Oxygenated blood circulating in our Arteries. Deep Breathing is the key to ensure better Oxygenation of the blood. Factors responsible for the activity of the brain : 1. 25% - 30% is due to the Diet we consume. 2. 70% - 75% is due to the emotions, attitude, memories and other processes of the brain. Thus, to calm the brain and reduce the demand on the heart to pump more and more blood, brain needs to be given a rest. Meditation is the most useful tool to calm an agitated mind. When we sit with eyes closed and meditate, the brain gets calmer, heart gets rested, thus insulating us from the Diseases of Heart & Brain. ▲ Meditation ▲ Yes, since 27 executive days I have been meditating. After a beautiful session with Hariprem and Kaulika at the Tantra Festival Holland I made a commitment with myself. If I wanted to become a Tantrica, and truly help people on their spiritual path, then I had to start with my own dedicated meditation practice. Let me tell you: I always thought it was a lot of ‘blablabla’ - don’t get me wrong, ofcourse I thought mindfulness was important and all - but I always thought it wasn’t really for me and that I just couldn’t ‘do’ it. • • Now recently I have been experiencing sooooo many benefits. Before I would just sit and wait until the timer would beep after 10 minutes. Now I feel I am moving deeper and deeper into... spaciousness. The Universe. Spirit. And it makes me a much nicer person. When I get really upset I can count to 10 instead of exploding. I can take an extra breath, before I lash out to my partner. There are less anxious thoughts in my mind. Today I participated in a social experiment against the exploitation of animals. We let the videos speak - we were standing up and showing up for what is happening to millions of animals around the globe to create and expand awareness. It can often be believed that meat can come from animals who are “respectfully” slaughtered with dignity - but there is no such thing. Global companies and manufacturers are not interested in the wellbeing of animals - only profitability. Neatly packaged meat wrapped in plastic in the supermarket and any shape or form of leather, fur, wool, feathers, silk, down, cashmere does not give us the true reality of the process. Loving-Kindness meditation focuses on developing feelings of goodwill, kindness and warmth towards others (Salzberg, 1997). Research shows that Loving Kindness Meditation has a tremendous amount of benefits ranging from improved well-being, to relief from illness and improving emotional intelligence. . In a landmark study, Barbara Frederickson and her colleagues (Fredrickson, Cohn, Coffey, Pek, & Finkel, 2008) found that practicing 7 weeks of loving-kindness meditation increased love, joy, contentment, gratitude, pride, hope, interest, amusement, and awe. These positive emotions then produced increases in a wide range of personal resources (e.g., increased mindfulness, purpose in life, social support, decreased illness symptoms), which, in turn, predicted increased life satisfaction and reduced depressive symptoms. . Furthermore, a study by Kearney et al (2013) found that a 12 week Loving Kindness Meditation course significantly reduced depression and PTSD symptoms among veterans diagnosed with PTSD. . I’ve always struggled to meditate and I had fallen out of regular practice with yoga over the years. Since my dog Cagney passed away though, I’ve needed to find movements to fill the stillness. So I’ve been doing free flow yoga. Basically that means I’ve been pulling out my mat, and for 30 minutes or so, I stretch into whatever position my body yearns for as I tune into nature. Leaves rustle under the feet of chipmunks, water crackles over softened rocks and mossy twigs, wind whistles through branches and sometimes sunbeams dance across my body. In each bend of muscle and flesh, my mind unwinds ever so slightly. Detangling emotions and letting the stress seep out my pores into the humid air. The woods, a perfect vessel to filter out toxins and reabsorb nutrients. It’s as if the moves have lived within me all along, charged and ready to deploy baggage. I finish, by letting go of that which I can’t control.
