🔄👉🏼 @tombilyeu If you want to have a radical impact on the world, there is one daily pleasure that you must relentlessly deny yourself above all others - patience.
Patience will stunt the progress of the greatest among us. Patience is the mistaken belief that time alone is sufficient to move you towards your goals. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Time is a magical ingredient, no doubt, but it only has juice when it is the ally of someone who goes into the world every day trying to make their 10 year plan happen in 6 months. You’ve got to be ceaselessly bold and inventive. You can’t tolerate incremental growth.
And the second you confuse the accumulative effect of honorable, radical actions taken consistently over time with the need to relax and let time run its course, you will slip into a passive posture and never recover.
The easiest metaphor to use is the gym. If you go to the gym thinking all you need to do is show up and work out consistently that you will get better, faster, stronger, you run the risk of being one of those people who works out FOR YEARS and looks exactly the same as they did the day they started.
Conversely, you also can’t come in and just do one insanely intense workout. They too will get you nowhere. The reality is, if you want to get better, faster, stronger, you’ve got to push yourself, HARD, day in and day out, consistently for years.
What I’ve seen with my own eyes is that when you tell someone to "be patient, it takes time", they relax, believing it will just happen if they give it enough time. Better to tell people that they need to go all out everyday over a long period of time. That is far more accurate, because without the ferocious desire to change right here and right now, no progress will be made.
Patience is NOT for the weak, though, that’s not what I’m saying. A life of patience, of being like water, may be the life that will deliver you the deepest fulfillment. I don’t pass any judgement on it. But if you’re trying to do something grand, if you’re trying to shake things up, if you’re trying to go from zero to one, patience is your enemy.
