Oregon in the spring time when the waterfalls are flowing and the foliage is bursting with fresh growth is pretty special. I first shot this in the early morning, but it was a little boring. I figured I would stick around and try again in the evening. At the time I never considered that with the hot temps of this past weekend and snow melt, the falls would be flowing huge.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Here’s a simple scene from the coast. I liked the way this piece of driftwood was framing the land so I got pretty low to the ground. The nice thing about a wide angle lens is the distortion/perspective it can give. I probably use my 16-35 lens 80% of the time . Cropped square, but full image can be seen if you swipe. == Canon 5D Mark IV @canonusa 16-35mm f/2.8L 17mm | f/13.0 // 0/6 sec // ISO 100 @mefototripods tripod ==

We seemed to have pretty much skipped over the cool, grey rainy spring straight to clear warm summer weather here in the northwest. While it’s been great for astrophotography, it’s mostly terrible for waterfalls :) I may be in the minority but once the temps hit 80+ I’m ready for a few grey rainy days. Shot info:

Sometimes you only have a brief window of time to capture the light before weather moves in. Here’s a panorama where that happened and the fog moved in quickly, obscuring the full sunrise. This one was a bit of an unexpected surprise. I’d been shooting the bridge from a different angle and had about given up on the sky to do anything. On my walk back to the car I saw it starting to turn and quickly realized the angle of the sun might allow me to snag a sunburst off the side of the bridge. If there’s one thing I love it’s a good sunburst. I try not to overdo it, but I’ve got a ton. 😂. There are certain sunbursts I plan ahead of time using apps, but this particular one was a happy accident. For the image, I layered a couple shots in photoshop to eliminate a couple passing cars as well as recover some blown out highlights right around the sun. I masked out the car from each layer and used the “clean” spots from each shot. == Canon 5D Mark IV Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 @ 35mm 3 (or 4) shots @ f/22 / 1/4 sec / ISO iso Blended for exposure ==

It's funny how a switch gets flipped when the weather gets warmer and you magically feel like everything is better. Almost like coming back to life at the same time the plants and trees do.

On the way home from a recent trip we stopped by this little waterfall. Normally I would get into the water and try to use a wide angle to give the feeling of standing right there, but in this case I used a longer focal length from a distance. Using a longer focal length can help compress elements in the frame making them look closer together. For instance the tiers of the falls look much closer together than they were, along with the ferns on the top right. Shot info:

The Long Night - Ok all my #gameofthrones friends how we feeling today? Please NO SPOILERS to those that haven’t seen it yet. I’ll say I think my heart rate is finally back to normal this morning. I saw a lot of 🤯 emojis after watching it, which about sums things up. It’s going to be sad when the whole thing is over. Almost every Milky Way outing is my own version of “the long night” and this night last year was no exception. On the very early morning drive home from another location there was still a bit of time left before the Milky Way set. Decided to take a quick stop here and shoot this composition. @pnw.zack drove back and forth a couple times so we could get enough trails. I generally try hard to come away with unique(ish) images, but this is not one of them. It’s been been done before and if instagram trends are to hold true, I’m sure you’ll see a bunch more popping up in the next couple months. I figured it was a good/fun challenge, and at least its not a tulip or a car with flowers growing out of it right? (sorry to all you tulip and car lovers out there but my feed has been overwhelmed for the past month) The photo was blended from 10 light frames for Milky Way (stacked) and 2 foreground shots, each with a portion of tail lights. Shot info:
== Canon 5D Mark IV Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 Stars 10 shots @ f2.8 / 17 sec / ISO 6400 stacked in starry landscape stacker Foreground: 2 shots for light trails, 30 seconds ISO 2500 Blended and edited in photoshop. ==

“Autumn Surprise” (2018) It’s been a challenge getting out this winter to get new images. More so now than ever, I feel like my calling is the backcountry, and going out to shoot on short, easily reached places just doesn’t seem as appealing to me. I didn’t get the time this winter to do many overnight trips, as I spent my free time learning to ski in hopes that next winter will be a big touring year with lots of overnight trips. With all this nice weather lately, I’m itching to hit the trails for a few nights and do some more shooting. Sorry for all the reposting lately, but I’m really excited to get lots of shots in the backcountry in this upcoming year! ——————————————— Interested in purchasing this print, or learning how I process my images? This image was taken last year and I finally got around to processing it. I still have a ways to go before I’m completely happy on my Milky Way edits, but like anything it takes time and practice. I know I’ll likely revisit this one and others as I continue to learn. As it is, I’m grateful for folks who have shared their knowledge and have helped with me thus far, and I try to pass along what I know as well. You can check out my story today for the general technique (and the details are also below). If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! Shot info:

The Phenomenal Noumenal Wonderful Pacific Northwest. I've been fortunate to spend many years wandering and photographing this incredibly diverse and dynamic landscape. Unfortunately, some of these beautiful places no longer exist as seen due to human impact, overuse, and destruction. I know this photo breaks the whole “I’m living in the desert now” theme i got going but i was recently scrolling through my own feed to realize I havent posted a newer photo of my face and the only photos slightly showing my faces were taken at the same place during the same time (sorry for that Instagram no no) so here I am! I’ve also been receiving a lot of very similar questions about my life as of late so here is a PSA as to what is actually going on. Are you still going to school? Yup very much so. I know most people think I’m not in school at all but I’m actually expected to graduate quite early and very soon 🎉 How are you traveling? My major has opened up a lot of opportunity to do different things as a part of my education and i have taken absolute full advantage of that Where are you working? In central Utah guiding backpacking trips for a wilderness therapy company (pretty stoked) Where are you living and why? If you haven’t figured it out already, my car. I’m still paying rent through the summer in Bellingham cause I have a totally awesome apartment and I didn’t want to move my stuff for what feels like the 746th time and paying rent in Utah would just be silly especially when there’s so much to do and see in so many different places. so my dad helped me build this platform that fits all of my needs for the next few months while I do my thing I hope that paints a clear picture to the best of its ability about my life ~ but always feel free to ask whatever questions that come up, i can see how its confusing ; ) ALSO if you haven’t seen my story.. due to popular demand (and by that I mean @hannahovaisi telling me this multiple times). I started a blog! so there’s this new link in my bio! And if you’ve been following along for this long you’re probably interested in short stories about my sleeping bag blowing away, trying to camp my way through LA, sleeping in Yosemite, crv life, or meeting @hannahovaisi in Sedona, so go click on it and let me know what ya think

Today marks my 21st trip around the sun... it’s been a helluva year for me! I always grew up being taught that you can have anything you want if you’re willing to work for it, but this last year was really the time in my life when I realized that the most. So stoked for what’s to come in the next year, and thank you so much for following along with me! ——————————————— Interested in purchasing this print, or learning how I process my images?
