Growing up I wasn't a big fan of camping. It seems like it was always crazy hot, or it rained - soaking both the tent, and me inside.
It's hard to believe that, prior to this recovery weekend, I had spent 3 of the last 4 weekends tent camping in a diverse grouping of Washington locations.
Most recently, as part of a 1 night pack packing trip to inner Olympic National Park, and the Enchanted Valley.
With a bear canister required, I opted to bring a 2 person MSR tent instead if the standard 3 person Marmot. While the weight isnt a lot different, the MSR packs down smaller. I was originally worried it would feel crowded, but I have to say, it was comfortable and didnt feel that much different than the 3p.
With the number of bears in the area (we unfortunately didnt see any, though it seems everyone else did), a ranger greeted us just as we arrived in the chalet area, after a 14 or 15 mile hike in. The direction was that fires are allowed, as long as an existing fire ring was used.
Since we got there late, most of the spots near the trail were already taken, which forced us to spend a bit more time looking. It ended up being a blessing, and we found this spot, spacious and completely out of view of the main trail.
Firewood was a challenge to find though, and I ended up lugging back a huge piece from the riverbed, but wasnt successful in breaking it down further, so ended up burning the full thing.
All in all it was a great trip, and I wanted to stay another night. It wasnt crazy hit, it didnt rain, and the mountain views and solitude were great.
