On this day, the intended hike was pretty arduous, with many ups, downs and inevitable challenges around every corner. Maybe, I wasn't feeling quite up for it or the changing weather conditions played more than a significant role. The clouds were mighty impressive though and filled full of rain. In between those Spring showers, the sun shone brightly and illuminated the landscape all around, if only for a limited time. I love days like this and the constant battle between my human self and the elements of nature. Often you feel like give up, cutting the day short, if only for a pint and a pub lunch. Nevertheless, you plod on, see it through and somehow make that final goal even more worthwhile. Amongst this drivel, there's a message in there somewhere... #englishcountryside #getoutside #countryside #smartphonephotography #thisprettyengland #peakdistrict __ My Blog account @garethmateblog 'Thoughts and Stories from the Great Outdoors'

Keddleston hall, Derbyshire - from my visit a couple of weekends ago. This stunning neoclassical hall was designed by Robert Adam to look like the courtyard of a Roman villa. Twenty alabaster fluted Corinthian columns surround the room, with a marble floor. #robertadam #keddlestonhall #keddleston #ntkeddleston #nationaltrustmember #nationaltrust #derbyshire #neoclassical #robertadam #classical #columns #alabaster #canoneosr #canon #britain #daytrip #ukpotd #ukig #bestofbritish #beautifulbritain #england #architecturalphotography #architecture #conservation #conservationarchitecture #capturingbritain

You can already smell the pungent wild garlic in the woods... which means foraging season is almost upon us! Spring is the ideal time to learn about the edible treats available in our woods, hedgerows and trees. We always recommend learning from an expert and there are a huge range of courses and classes in the area throughout the next few months. @TudorFarmhouseHotel & Restaurant run foraging expeditions with Raoul van Den Broucke, dubbed “the Carluccio of the Wye Valley” by The Guardian. Depending on the season foraged items might include a wide variety of edible mushrooms, wild garlic, sorrel, bitter cress, pennywort, wimberries, sea beat, marsh samphire, edible flowers and wild strawberries. @HartsBarnCookery School run Forage and Feast classes throughout the year with foraging trips in nearby woods followed by a class to create a feast to dine on and they also offer bespoke classes which are great for groups. Stay at @PenheinGlamping in the Wye Valley and you can book their Forage and Feast Day or the fantastic sounding Botanical Gin Foraging! Learn what you can do with crab apples and rosehips, cobnuts and orchard fruit with Foraging: A Wild Taste of the Hedgerow with @FarmerHumble. Enjoy a stay at the @The_Angel_Abergavenny and book their Foraging Fun Break for a 3 hour foraging experience with Adele Nozedar. And of course if you just want to sample the delights of the region without having to get out into the woods yourself there is @TheWhitebrook who are renowned for using locally foraged ingredients in their stunning dishes. #DeanWye #WildlifePhotography #LoveNature #ScenicBritain #VisitBritain #ForestOfDean #OMGB #GreatBritain #CapturingBritain #BrilliantBritain #LoveGreatBritain #InspiringPlaces #BestUnitedKingdom #VisitEngland #UKPOTD #GlosPOTD #Gloucestershire #PhotosOfBritain #OurForest #LoveBritain #TravelDestinations_IG #Explore_Britain #BBCEngland #BBCRadioGlos #Foraging #WildGarlic #Forage #LearnToForage

We arrived in the Peaks on Saturday afternoon and the forecast overnight was for snow. Sunday morning gave a dusting at our cottage but we could see more north of us so took a trip to Mam Nick to see what was about. Well we did the short climb onto Mam Tor and Oh My Goodness was it windy! We could literally barely stand or move at the Trig Point. A few clicks andca hasty retreat back to the Nick where this was taken. A few snow showers were blowing through. . . . 📷 @olympusuk OM-D EM5ii with 12-40mm Pro Lens. The Wreck of the MV Dayspring | Corpach , Fort William - Scotland The Golden Harvest , or the Corpach Wreck - Built in 1975 but unfortunately ran aground on December 8 2011 during a heavy storm and has been there ever since. But the old fishing vessel, with Ben Nevis in the background, has become one of the most iconic images of the area for photographers to visit. Which is rightly so , because for me it is one of my favourite locations to photograph when in Glencoe. Having shot this before during a gorgeous burning sunset March last year & being one of my favourite images I have taken to date...I knew it would take something special to improve upon. Unfortunately , Myself & Ryan Harris were not blessed with a sunset or any colour at all for that matter. We made the most of the weather , clouds & the fast flowing water.

Calm morning on the Mersey

Loch Tulla Viewpoint | Loch Tulla , Argyll and Bute - Scotland Without a doubt , one of the most famous views prior to entering Glencoe. I would love to tell you we hiked a huge mountain in dramatic weather & it was brutal however , that would be so far from the truth! The first thing both myself & Ryan noticed was the weather , the weather was constantly changing every five minutes. Light hitting the mountains made for an excellent image so I opted for a 15 image vertical shot panoramic. Managing to photograph the mood of the morning gave us an insight in to what we was about to experience for the rest of the week.

Serenity | Loch Lomand & The Trossachs National Park , Scotland Months in the planning & with excitement building , Myself & Ryan Harris left his house at 12.01AM to make it to Loch Lomand for sunrise & to begin our Scottish Highlands adventure. The obvious composition was the lone tree to the far right of these boulders , however that did not hold my interest & found the overall scene too easy to photograph. Working the boulders in to a leading line was a little more difficult as I had never been to the location before & scouting compositions in the dark is never easy. Before we knew it , Blue hour was over & the sun had began to rise behind us giving lovely pink hues against the blue clear skies over the mountains across the Loch.

Ancient | Bolehill Quarry , Bolehill - The Peak District Bolehill offers endless interest & my curiosity to explore further in this area of The Peak District is never ending. It is fast becoming one of my favourite locales. With the recent changes to the weather bringing grey cloud & rain I really wanted to head back & study the walls of the quarry. The colours - textures & different shapes was very intriguing however taking a photograph didn't come easy.

Detached | Dale Abbey - Derbyshire Once the sun had lifted & the light became a little harsh I left the woodland & noticed this lone tree. Due to the mist , Everything was separated & my eyes were fixated on just the tree.

Woodland Gold | Dale Abbey - Derbyshire Conditions yesterday morning were just perfect! The right amount of mist & fog. Once the sunshine began to burst through it changed the entire atmosphere of the woodland. This image was taken five minutes away from my house & for that , I am incredibly lucky & grateful.

The Meeting | Bolehill - The Peak District Myself & Ryan had checked the weather forecast the night before with clear skies throughout the evening & into the morning with a sunrise looking promising. We headed to Mam Tor & arrived at our location with an hour to spare prior to sunrise. We was truly spoilt with conditions as plenty of mist , haze & atmosphere oozed throughout the valley as the sky lit on fire. Once the sun was up , fog became increasingly dense so we had a wander to Bolehill. The fog still dense as ever , I noticed this arrangement of trees & shot a three image pano to try & make order amongst the chaos that is Bolehill. Without a doubt , my favourite image I have captured this far.

Barren | Ladybower Reservoir - The Peak District Thirteen miles walked & only one photograph taken. This image sums up the day , bleak & overcast with showers.

Galanthus | Dale Abbey - Derbyshire Always fascinating what captures your attention as the years go by & the older you become.

Solitary | Wildboarclough - Cheshire With Chrome Hill not delivering as expected. Myself & Ryan still felt the morning had more to deliver as the sun was clearing the clouds , the light as becoming more & more pleasing. Ryan often has this habit of just driving , driving & keeping his eye out for something that may catch our eyes. On this occasion , it certainly did! We noticed a barn that was disused nestled amongst trees & long yellow grass. We both noticed the light gently caressing the hills to the east so it was just a matter of waiting & being patient. Our patience paid off.

The Dragons Back | Chrome Hill , Buxton - The Peak District Dramatic skies blocked any chance of a sunrise but the sun did try it's hardest to break through the most subtle of colours. The landscape looked ever so green & this has me excited for Spring.

Frozen Planet | Winnats Pass , Castleton - The Peak District The first of the morning's sunlight soaking the landscape over one of the Peak Districts most famous view spots.

Breathe | Winnats Pass , Castleton - The Peak District With the colder weather continuing & what looked like a stunning beginning to the morning promised by various weather apps , Myself & Ryan headed for Winnats Pass , Castleton. We was both also banking on the chances of a cloud inversion. Once arrived , it came to no surprise that we was not alone as twenty plus other photographers were storming the slopes of Mam Tor & Winnats Pass ready to seal their place for the sun to rise. To be honest , It was a Saturday morning with an excellent forecast it was always going to be busy. We both instantly lost interest as did our excitement with the thought of capturing the same image along with twenty others. I turned around to notice a gorgeous pink hue above pristine white snow & dashed for the wall as a leading line , also noticing the beginning of low cloud forming as the sun began to rise.

Adrift | Roach End Barn - The Roaches , The Peak District With our original plans to capture an image that has been top of the list for some time now & waiting for those conditions to deliver meant an early start. However , upon arrival we did not anticipate the fog. Thick - dense & very bleak however very very beautiful at the same time. With viability at zero this meant being creative as we explored. Roach End Barn looked beautiful as the snow drifts built up against the reeds & the fog giving complete separation between the subjects.

The Last of Us | Buxton - The Peak District Heavy snow was forecast across the area of Buxton within the Peak District. After various checks with Met Office , it was confirmed that there would be freezing fog to assist the snow. That was it , this is all myself & Ryan needed. With sunrise out of the question & we knew this , we headed to Hitter Hill to photograph Chrome Hill & Parkhouse Hill however once upon arrival , it was a complete white out & visibility was zero. With our original plan unsuccessful we drove through the dense fog & scouted compositions until we came across this family of trees that could barely be seen. They gave me the impression as if they were the last trees to exist & were going to stay together no matter what happened.

Broken | Manor Floods , Ilkeston - Derbyshire As I was walking along the edges of the lake taking in how beautiful everything looked frosted white , I noticed cracks within the lake it'self over the surface. These cracks were becoming more apparent as the temperature increased throughout the morning. I personally found them fascinating & made great for a foreground / leading line towards the trees in the distant background. I used a touch of polarisation to take the sheen of the ice & add contrast.

Marshland | Manor Floods , Ilkeston - Derbyshire Empty marshlands next to the nature reserve appeared extensive & creepy. With the fog to separate any subject made a pleasure to photograph.

Left Behind | Manor Floods , Ilkeston - Derbyshire Back to my local jaunt this morning after following the weather reports all week. I know this area very well as I have been returning & photographing different subjects numerous times. The forecast exceeded expectations this morning & conditions like this do not happen often. I walk past these trees a lot & always glance back at them as they tower over the water sunken reed under them.

Winter Light | Hitter Hill - Earl Sterndale , The Peak District Having just photographed a panoramic of Chrome Hill & Park house Hill - being satisfied with the conditions given I glanced behind my shoulder to see the sky ablaze with pinks & oranges. I reacted quickly & dashed over with my tripod to see a valley being bathed in the first of the morning's sunlight. A stunning winters morning with clear skies & -4c wind chill.

Silver Birch | Surprise View , The Peak District Gorgeous winter light smothered the landscape as I ventured out of the dense woodlands in Bolehill. I made my way through Surprise View to have my lunch at Upper Owler Tor but became heavily distracted by the stunning lone trees that were on the outskirts. I love the simplicity in this image.

Bolehill Reflections | Bolehill Quarry , The Peak District The forecast for the day was clear blue skies with gorgeous winter sunlight & crisp cool air , Today also meant it was the first day I was able to get to the Peak District this year. I eventually made it to Bolehill , which was completely deserted with no other walkers photographers or climbers so I just sat , I sat & stared at the quarry walls listening to the birds & the slight breeze hitting the dense trees that surrounded me. Bolehill Quarry is a fascinating place as there so much to see & inspect , I captured this image just as the sun was still rising giving a golden glow against the walls & pool of water below.
