painting in progress
This is the first one in which I try to combine my self made earth colors with commercial modern colors.
There is a special quality to self made earth colors you can't usually get with the commercial ones. For example, I can grind the pigments to any desired grade. So it is possible to get much granulation and even sandy structures. Also, I can use exactly the same pigments as watercolors, as inks and as actylic paint, all in the same painting.
That's exactly what I try to do with this painting.
Using earth colors and modern colors together in one painting is a bit problematic because a balance needs to be found between the very bright and vibrant modern colors and the often rather weak and duller earth colors.
The modern colors can overpower the old ones easily if they are used too much.
But the old colors can lend a more natural, somehow calmer and more balanced quality to the often artificial looking, "loud" and "screamng" modern colors.
On the other hand, it might be interesting checking out if an intentionally created very hard contrast between an eartcolor and a modern one could bring about a secial desired effect in a painting, and if this technique could be used in other paintings as well.
