@michael.s.becker took this shot of a large leopard seal eyeing the camera and me before returning to her snooze. The sequence went out last night on @natgeo Hostile Planet. The lep’s are great animals to work with, intelligent and when they wanted to be, very curious. One in particular (nicknamed scarface) took particular delight in sneaking up on us in the little inflatable boat till one day managed a stealth approach from directly beneath and wrapping her large jaws around the tube, popped it. I think she was happy with her work. Congratulations @oceanx and @bbcearth for the Webby, brilliant piece directed by @mdalio and featuring Jon Copley, bathynaut extraordinaire. Posted @withrepost @oceanx And the award goes to... OceanX! This year’s #Webbys winner for Education & Discovery is our journey among the incredible life that thrives more than 3,000 feet below the ice of Antarctica. The ecosystem at these previously unexplored depths is blanketed in thick marine snow, an organic material that feeds lush landscapes of life. This is a sea untouched by man, and here is Earth as it existed 250 million years ago, with giant animals like the affectionately dubbed “deathstar,” a sunflower sea star with 50 arms. Directed by Mark Dalio, produced with @bbcearth , with cinematography by Ted Giffords, @thegavinthurston , @hughdmiller , @janssenpowers , and @jdubadoo. Thanks to @thewebbyawards and all our supporters for the win! . . . #oceanx #antarctica #ourblueplanet #seastar #starfish #deepseacreatures #oceanexploration #travel #exploration #ocean #oceanlove #sea #nature #instagood #instanature #wildlife #marinewildlife #animal #uwphoto #uwphotography #submersible #submarine #invertebrate #marinebiology #marinebiologistlife #predator #shrimp #krill #blueplanet2

Beautiful Cornish blue sharks filmed for #ourplanet on a very short two day shoot. Day one poured with rain, but we got lucky on day two. So short on time, I ate lunch in the water, holding onto the side of the boat as the curious blues nuzzled around me. @gisleks throwing food at me (mostly chocolate based) and me mostly catching it. Probably (thanks to the blues not the chocolate) the most memorable and enjoyable day I’ve ever had diving in home waters. Thank you for the photos @olly_scholey. Posted @withrepost @olly_scholey It’s behind you..! Underwater cinematographer @hughdmiller with a blue shark brushing past him, while on an incredible shark dive off the coast of Cornwall. Can’t believe I got to spend time with this amazing creature. Something, if not from mythology, then certainly from the deep. #ourplanet #netflix Posted @withrepost @olly_scholey Screengrab from @ourplanet Ep6 of the rarest animal we filmed for the entire series, an oarfish. Check out the behind the scenes of how we filmed it at: https://www.ourplanet.com/en/video/behind-the-scenes-oarfish/ These guys grow up to 10m long, and are the source of the mythical sea creature “the sea serpent” - which is unsurprising as they basically look like a ginormous snake. In order to film them we spent a huge amount of time diving at night, 40 miles from land, in 2 mile deep water, waiting for one to come up from the deep sea..which is one of the more spooky experiences I’ve had! Incredible team effort over two years to get just a handful of shots of this extraordinary animal. Reposting @bbcamerica who shared this photo I took whilst filming for the Natural History Unit and the series “Life” back in 2009. I was filming the high speed shots of sailfish feeding - showing for the first time that the bill was not vestigial and was used actively to knock fish out of the school. The HD camera belonged more in a lab than in the water chasing fish. The battery was so big it was housed separately on my back and I had to keep swimming just to stay on the surface it was that heavy. The non-removable memory gave me three seconds a shot for four shots total - after which I’d swim back to the boat and it would be an hour of downloading before the camera was primed again, by which time the action was usually over. I had to be picky about taking shots, which is hard when it’s the fastest fish in the sea. In the end I just went with my gut, when my adrenaline spiked I hit the trigger. The upside to the camera down time was I got to take some stills before the sails had finished off the baitball. They are, I think, one of the most beautiful fish in the sea and I’ve had a soft spot for them ever since. #underwater #underwaterphotography #nature #scuba #science #sea #sailfish #naturalhistory #diving #freediving #wildlife #nikon

The endless drama of giant cuttlefish mating in southern Australia. They need a hard substrate to lay eggs and the rocky seabed on this small point of land at the top of an otherwise muddy bay concentrates the animals so wherever you look there’s some drama being played out. Giant males fight to protect females whilst the females ultimately choose who they mate with - could be a giant male or could be a sneaker (a small male that often imitates a female on one side of its body and a male on the other, depending on who’s watching). Taken at the end of the day - when the light had dropped too much for filming #blueplanet2 - I’d get a few minutes to take photos before the sun set. Whilst I was using my #reddigitalcinema Dragon for filming, I used my full spectrum modified #sonyA7R behind an ancient #nikonos lens for stills. I love using the full spectrum camera underwater, reds improve dramatically and overall sensitivity improves #wildlife #ccr #underwater #diving #scuba #uwphotography #underwaterphotography
