“WE WANNA WORK WITH YOU”, the words every creator, model or aspiring artist wants to hear. Now the toughest question of all... What should I charge? Sometimes clients will come with a budget for you to work with, at that point you can either decide if you want to take the job, turn it down, or ask for more money with a supporting explanation on why.
Placing value in your own work can sometimes be difficult and it’s different for everyone. If you’re just starting out your rates are going to be much lower then someone who has been shooting for a while. When a client asks you to quote them for a job take the following into consideration:
Do you want to work with the client?
Do you need it for your portfolio?
How long will it take you to shoot and edit?
Will you be required to hire other people?
What is the client requiring for deliverables ?
After you’ve answered a few of these questions, you should have a pretty good idea of what’s involved in the job. If you’re just starting out and the money isn’t great, take it as more of an experience based job to add to your portfolio but ensure your costs are covered. If you don’t have much experience expect to do more jobs in exchange for products and services or even sometimes for free. Although paid jobs are preference, if you don’t have the portfolio samples to show the client, it can make it difficult for them to place a value on hiring you. If you don’t know the average rates for photography and videography where you live, ask friends or fellow creators. At the end of the day you want your work to speak for itself; work with with the clients that value you as an artist and understand the cost of good content. +
